Perfect for Light and Mid Duty Screwdriving
While just about every cordless drill/driver these days features some sort of adjustable torque control, it’s not something you’d generally find on a battery-powered screwdriver. The Worx 4V cordless screwdriver, however, features 3 pushbutton settings: 22 in-lbs., 33 in-lbs., and 44 in-lbs. It also has a max 300 rpm no-load speed which you manage from the rocker switch on the handle.
The Worx 4V Cordless Screwdriver weighs just a pound and a half. With its slim frame, it fits neatly in any drawer, toolbox, or glove compartment. And, because it can hold a charge for up to 18 months, you won’t constantly have to worry about recharging it.
The internal 1.5Ah battery has a no-load runtime of 45 minutes, and when it does need recharging, you can accomplish that task in just an hour and a half. It comes with a USB-C charging cable.
The Worx 4V Cordless Screwdriver features some rubber overmolding on the handle for comfort, as well as two LED lights on the front to help you see what you’re doing.
The Worx WX240L says it comes with twelve 1/4″ hex-shanked bits, however, all of the photos show around 25… Honestly, we have no idea how many bits it comes with—and until we get one in for review—we can’t really answer the question since Works seems to have contradictory information on its website, videos, and marketing materials. In either case expect to receive a mix of #2 Phillips bits, a 2″ extension/impact driver bit, and at least 10 other popular Phillips, slotted, Torx, and/or square bits. A magnetic holder also accepts other hex shank bits. All of this comes in a double-clasp blow-molded plastic case.
What We Think
Tools like this work well for your basic screw driving needs. Assemble furniture, affix wall plates, etc. You never use these tools for tasks that require real amounts of torque (like driving a screw into wood, for example). What that means is that any tool like this can do the job.
The best thing about the Worx 4V cordless screwdriver is the 3-speed modes. The downside is the price—at $40 you’re putting a big premium on a tool that just drives screws. The price seems even worse when you consider tools like the $30 Skil 4V screwdriver. It delivers basically the same type of functionality for $10 less—and includes an NCV (non-contact voltage detector).
Comparing the two tools, you get the following:
Worx WX240L | Skil SD561201 | |
---|---|---|
Battery | 1.5Ah 4V Li-ion | 1.3Ah 4V Li-ion |
Speed (max) | 300 RPM | 230 RPM |
Torque (max) | 44 in-lbs | 36 in-lbs |
Locking chuck | No | Yes |
LED | Yes | Yes |
NCV Sensor | No | Yes |
Speeds | 3 | 1 |
Price | $39.99 | $29.99 |
So will the Worx 4V screwdriver get the job done? Absolutely. But Skil gives you more functionality for less—and we prefer the locking chuck. With tools like this, you typically want to use a bit extender anyway to give you more room to maneuver. That means a locking chuck provides a more secure method of holding your bits in place while you work.
