Vaughan and Bushnell have introduced the newest generation of hammer with their V3. We like Vaughan hammers and the Vaughan V3 is an exceptional addition since it is finally available in a smaller 16 ounce head and 13″ handle. The existing V5 and V5a are designed for framing applications and heavier-duty work and have a 19 ounce head and 17″ handle. All of the V-series hammers from Vaughan are available in both milled and smooth face, so you can use them in rough framing as well as jobs where a smooth face is required (we typically like and use smooth face for all applications regardless).
The Vaughan V3 has their signature “Deep V” head design to reduce shock and vibration to the handle. The V3 also has an interestingly steep claw that gives a lot of leverage for nail pulling, though it also requires the hammer to be at an extreme angle to get ahold of the nail head – which is why they carried over the side-mounted nail puller to get into tighter quarters. Like the V5, the V3 hammer has a magnetic nail holder for one-handed nail starting. Vaughan hammers are 100% made in the USA – for some, an even better reason to go check one out.
