I’ve done my share of crimping down RJ45 connectors in my time—mostly for friends of mine wanting to get their networks up and running. The Klein Compact Ratcheting Modular Crimper (VDV226-107) uses a reverse crimping action that seems more ergonomic and efficient than more traditional crimpers. It also has a heavy duty ratchet that works in conjunction with the lateral motion to provide a solid crimp for both 6-conductor (phone) and 8-conductor (Ethernet/RJ45) modular connectors. And it’s really small, measuring just 5-1/4″ in length.
The Klein compact ratcheting modular crimper also adds more functionality, so you can avoid having to grab a bunch of other tools to complete the job. It has an integrated cutting and stripping tool that will handle CAT6, CAT5e, CAT3 and flat-satin voice cables. And of course it crimps both six and eight position modular connectors. The heavy-duty ratchet is set to automatically release once a full compression cycle and termination is completed. Klein also claims that by using a direct lateral crimping action, they achieve a more uniform and precise termination across all of the pins.
This is a nice one-handed tool that looks easy and comfortable to use. It even includes the most commonly-used wiring diagrams right on the tool itself, including T568B and T568A 8-conductor layouts. That means people like me who don’t spend all day long crimping (and subsequently forget the pattern) can reference them as needed. You can also download more wiring diagrams (via Klein’s website) to your smart phone.
