DeWalt’s New Cordless Combination Hammer Handles the Toughest Concrete
We got our hands on the DeWalt Cordless 1-3/4″ Combination Hammer at the 2020 World of Concrete. This tool marks the latest addition to the growing lineup of DeWalt cordless SDS Max rotary hammers. The DeWalt DCH614 SDS-Max combination hammer runs off the company’s 60V FlexVolt battery platform. It has enough power to tackle 4-inch core drilling or 1-3/4-inch rotary hammer duties. The tool lowers vibration thanks to the integrated Shocks Active Vibration Control system. It also “automagically” keeps the site OSHA-compliant when its onboard wireless control connects to the DeWalt DCV585 dust extractor.

DeWalt DCH614 SDS-Max Combination Hammer Highlights
The DeWalt 60V SDS-Max FlexVolt 1-3/4″ combination hammer features a brushless motor that achieves 10.5 Joules of impact energy. With up to 380 RPM and 1,450-2,900 BPM it handles drilling horizontally or vertically in tough concrete. The optimized drilling range for this tool falls between 5/8″ and 1-1/4″. DeWalt tells us the DCH614 is suited for horizontal serial drilling for #5-#8 rebar, dry coring up to 4″, chipping in any upper to lower wall, and bushing (roughing up the surface of concrete).
The DCH614 features a 7-position variable speed control for better precision when chipping, bushing, and drilling. It also features DeWalt’s active Shocks system to drastically reduce the vibration felt at the rear handle. Finally, an E-Clutch protects you from bind-ups.
For consistency, DeWalt uses feedback from the brushless motor so that its Constant Speed Control maintains the speed under load for smoother drilling or coring.
For connectivity with a dust extractor, the DeWalt DCH614 also includes wireless tool control. This can communicate with the FlexVolt 60V Max Dust Extractor (DCV585).
Hands-on with the 60V SDS-Max 1-3/4″ Hammer
Fortunately, we got our hands on the new DeWalt 1-3/4″ combination hammer and had plenty of concrete on which to test it. On first impression—it’s light enough to do some serious wall-drilling. With the DCV585 close by, the two tools paired in less than a second. The DCH614 features integrated wireless connectivity—so you don’t have to add a module or chip to get it ready for Bluetooth pairing to a compatible extractor. Once paired, squeezing the trigger on the combination hammer immediately activated the dust extractor. This combination of tool and extractor drastically reduced the amount of silica dust exposure. Given current OSHA silica dust regulations, you may want to opt for this configuration.
The vibration was more than tolerable—the active controls seem to work very well. Even without gloved hands, the felt vibration was very minimal considering how much drilling we performed. We’d like to try it with hammering and chipping, but we lacked the time—perhaps when we get it in for review.
