Toro Revolution String Trimmer Enters Competitive Pro Market
Over the years, we’ve really enjoyed Toro’s 60V Flex-Force OPE lineup for residential applications. Now, they’ve introduced the Toro Revolution String Trimmer, which targets the Pro market with a more commercial-grade build and robust look. Since this is their first move into the Pro-grade battery-powered market, I decided to take a deeper dive to show you what sets it apart from other models you might be considering.
We just tested ten of the best battery-powered string trimmers—check it out to see our top recommendations!
Pros
- Excellent cutting speed
- Excellent vibration control
- Good runtime
- Rapid load head
- Optional backpack for batteries
Cons
- Expensive
- Heavy
Toro Revolution String Trimmer Performance
- No-Load Speed: 0-5300/6400 RPMs
- Max Line Diameter: 0.095 in.
- Cutting Swath: 16 in.
- Runtime: 28.1 min. (with 4.0Ah battery)
Cutting Power
The Toro 66110T features a brushless motor and a two-speed gearbox that produces 5,300 RPMs on low, and a whopping 6,400 RPMs in high gear. These speeds are high, even for a Pro-grade trimmer. Plus, having a two-speed gearbox allows you to prioritize between max power and longer runtime, depending on your conditions.
This trimmer is set up to handle 0.095-inch trimmer line, which is the gold standard for residential string trimmers. However, I find it interesting that Toro didn’t opt for the more robust 0.105-inch line for this commercial trimmer. It’s possible they stuck with 0.095 for the sake of runtime, or because there aren’t any 0.105-capable trimmers anywhere in the current lineup, but that’s just speculation on my part.
Regardless, this trimmer performed extremely well during our testing and was able to knock down some very stout grasses in our neighbor’s back pasture. This is an extreme scenario, but what it tells me is that this trimmer will easily stand up to the tasks of your average mow and blow crew, and won’t have any trouble reclaiming overgrown areas.
Vibration
This is one of the make-or-break categories for me when I test string trimmers. A trimmer with high vibration levels can absolutely kill your arms and ruin the whole experience. With that said, Toro did a great job in this department.
The vibration level is minimal, and I didn’t experience excessive hand fatigue while testing this trimmer. If you’re a landscape Pro who has exclusively used gas equipment, you’re in for a pleasant surprise.
Runtime
Runtime is usually a significant pain point for battery-powered string trimmers, especially for Pros who are thinking about making the switch. Toro ended up with a final runtime of 28.1 minutes in high gear with a 4.0Ah battery. This is a very impressive number and inspires confidence that a crew will have an easier time with battery management than with some of the brands we’ve reviewed.
Toro Revolution String Trimmer Design Notes
- Model: Toro 66110T
- Power Source: Toro 60V battery
- Weight: 15.1 lbs (with 4.0Ah battery)
- Length: 74.5 in.
- Stock Head: Dual-line, rapid load
Size and Weight
The Toro 66110T weighs 15.1 pounds with the recommended 4.0Ah battery and measures 74.5 inches from tip to tail. The overall balance is quite favorable, but it is noticeably heavier than comparable battery-powered models. Fortunately, Toro’s design does include a tether point where you can attach a shoulder strap and take some of the weight off your arms.
If you do want to shave off a little extra weight, you can always pair this trimmer with a smaller 2.5Ah battery, but this will decrease your runtime.
Grip and Trigger
As with most string trimmers, the Toro Revolution string trimmer features a beaver-tail safety and a two-finger trigger. Personally, I really like their design because it’s straightforward and makes for a very easy transition from a gas-powered trimmer.
The grip is draped in a textured rubber overmold, which definitely comes in handy on those hot Summer days when excess sweat is unavoidable. This design also helps dampen some of the vibrations that you feel through your hand while you’re working.
Line Loading
I’m glad to see that Toro opted for a rapid-load trimmer head on this commercial-grade trimmer. It eliminates so much potential downtime and truly simplifies the whole process down to a few seconds rather than minutes.
To respool, start by aligning the green markings on the trimmer head. Then, feed up to 24 feet of line through the spool. Lastly, make sure your line lengths are even and twist the bottom of the trimmer head to wind in the line. This is a huge advantage for busy crews who don’t have time to waste. Plus, that 24-foot line capacity is generous, so you’ll be changing line less often.
Revolution Backpack Battery System
During my research on this trimmer, it became very clear that Toro is trying its hardest to appeal to the Pro market by offering cross-integrated solutions. At the core of the Revolution system is the 60V Revolution Backpack battery system, which can hold up to two 10.0Ah batteries.
This backpack is compatible with Toro’s Arm Cannon leaf blower, hedge trimmer, and the Powerlink tether, which helps alleviate some of the weight of the tools. Plus, this system allows you to quickly switch between tools without any extra hassle.
Additional Features
- Folding metal battery guard
- Compatible with all Toro 60V batteries
Toro Revolution String Trimmer Price
The Toro 66110T retails for $399 as a bare tool and comes with a 2-year warranty. At the time of writing this, there aren’t any kit options available, so be sure to pick up a battery and charger before you check out.
The Bottom Line
While the Revolution String Trimmer is not the most powerful battery-powered string trimmer we’ve tested, its performance is solid, and the commercial-grade build is a big step forward for Toro.
The only significant hesitations for some are the weight and price tag. While there are options to deal with the weight, the $399 bare tool price might be a little steep if you’re used to looking at residential or entry-level prices. It’s not out of line compared to premium Pro options from Stihl or Husqvarna, though.
There’s no question Toro is targeting Pros with the Revolution string trimmer. For road crews and others who clear large areas of overgrowth, you might find it’s not quite as strong as you’d like. On the other hand, it’s a compelling option for lawn crews who want to efficiently and quickly handle maintenance trimming.
