We attended the 2012 International Builders Show in Orlando, Florida and were making our rounds when our eye was caught by the ZipDoor. This is a dust barrier product that makes it super-easy to cover a doorway and seal off a room from dust ingress and/or egress. The ZipDoor kit comes with everything you need, including a roll of tape and plastic lining and is designed for use in residential or commercial applications. Featuring ZipWall’s new double-sided tape and heavy duty, glued-in zippers, the ZipDoor installs – literally – in under one minute to provide a complete dust barrier. The ZipDoor is made of 4 mil plastic sheeting and comes in both standard (3’x7′) and commercial (4’x8′) door/opening sizes. In addition to being larger, the commercial version of the ZipDoor is also fire retardant.
“Doors are obviously one of the most problematic areas for dust containment, especially at sites like hospitals and commercial buildings. Because one person can install it in less than a minute, the ZipDoor can save time and money on every job.”
– Jeff Whittemore, President of ZipWall
ZipWall ZipDoor Dust Barrier Features
Attaching the ZipDoor to the door frame is easy thanks to the included double-sided tape. The ZipWall tape also uses a paper backing, so it tears easily, with no scissors or utility knife necessary. The side which is applied to the door frame performs like painter’s tape and is suitable to short-term use on even sensitive materials. The other side has a more aggressive adhesive that secures the plastic sheeting to the frame. Though it’s designed with high hold, the adhesive gives you up to an hour to reposition it the doorway before fully bonding to the plastic. Because it’s so quick to install and includes a zipper door, the ZipDoor kit should actually outperform the door coverage specifications in the EPA RRP (Renovation, Repair & Painting) Rule. The ZipDoor is unique in that its two pre-installed, heavy-duty zippers are glued on, not sewn-in, for maximum sheer strength and resistance to tearing. The zippers also extend all the way to the floor, reducing or eliminating tripping hazards of a hatch-style door. When open, the door flap rolls up and stows easily in the provided flap hooks.
