We had the opportunity to get a close look at the new Bosch Core18V battery pack at World of Concrete in Las Vegas back in January. Bosch moved into the upgraded lithium-ion category in three key ways with the Core18V (it goes by Eneracer in Europe).
First, Bosch made the move from the 18650 lithium-ion cell to 20700. It’s a bigger cell that carries more potential energy. They also changed up the pack’s cooling technology. Now the cells are completely separated and the pack has better heat dissipation characteristics.
Finally, engineers worked with the cell connections. In the old batteries, a simple soldering method was used. In the Bosch Core18V pack, it’s now laser welded with a copper connection. The result is reduced resistance which allows for more efficient energy transfer. In other words, they can get more power and runtime out of it.
