The Metabo HPT MultiVolt 1-9/16″ SDS-Max Rotary Hammer (model DH36DMAQ2) promises over 10.4 J of impact energy. It works with the company’s 36V MultiVolt batteries or you can insert the AC adapter and convert it into a corded tool. This hybrid functionality makes for a truly unique rotary hammer that solves a variety of problems for those looking to get serious work done on a job site.
Metabo HPT MultiVolt SDS-Max Rotary Hammer Features
The Metabo HPT DH36DMAQ2 rotary hammer uses a brushless motor and has RFC (Reactive Force Control). This essentially lets the Metabo HPT DH36DMAQ2 rotary hammer sense an overload and stop rotation to protect both the user and the tool.
Metabo HPT claims the DH36DMAQ2 rotary hammer can drill sixty-one (61) 5/8-inch diameter holes 2-3/8 in. deep in concrete on a single 4Ah MultiVolt battery. These new batteries use newer 21700 cells. They have the potential to deliver more than 1,440W of power to the tool. I remember when a cordless SDS-Max rotary hammer was unreachable via battery power. Now, we’re counting how many holes they can drill.
A soft grip low vibration rear handle reduces vibration to the user and the 360-degree side handle helps counter the rotational torque. SDS-Max bits insert as you’d expect, and release without much effort.
A mode select dial lets you switch between hammer (chipping) mode and hammer drill mode. There is no drill-only function on this tool. Metabo HPT also provides a 4-speed selection button in front of the trigger. You can select between the following modes.
4 Speed/Hammer Modes
- 1 – 0-260 RPM / 0-1,420 BPM
- 2 – 0-340 RPM / 0-1,850 BPM
- 3 – 0-410 RPM / 0-2,240 BPM
- 4 – 0-590 RPM / 0-2,860 BPM
Additional Functions
The Metabo HPT MultiVolt SDS-Max rotary hammer comes with a hard case, grease, depth gauge, and side handle. Just add a 4Ah MultiVolt 36V battery (BSL36B18) and charger and you can get to work. The 4 Ah Metabo HPT MultiVolt battery charges in less than an hour (52 minutes). The tool weighs a respectable 17.4 lbs with the battery. That makes it less than a pound heavier than their corded DH40MEY SDS-Max rotary hammer. Since you get to ditch the cord, I’d say that’s a win.
Conclusion
We’ve got this tool in for review, so we’ll update once we get it back from our Pro. For now, we’re excited the Metabo HPT MultiVolt 1-9/16″ SDS-Max Rotary Hammer delivers nearly the power of a corded tool. In fact, it produces just 0.4 ft-lbs less force than their Pro Tool Innovation Award-winning DH40MEY. For a battery-powered tool that can tackle over 60 holes on a single pack—that’s impressive.
