DeWalt released three new small grinders to ring in the new year…or at least the summer. These are new 4-1/2″ small angle grinders with brakes including the DeWalt DWE4222N angle grinder, DeWalt DWE4222, and DeWalt DWE4224. We saw several of these new models at the 2015 DeWalt media event in Charlotte. These upgraded DeWalt angle brake grinders are designed for professionals who need a safe solution for grinding welds, beveling steel, or cutting pipe and steel plate.
The new DeWalt DWE4222, DeWalt DWE4222N, and DeWalt DWE4224 small angle grinders replace the DeWalt D28402 and DeWalt D28402N with some new upgrades. For starters, all three new DeWalt small angle grinders feature a Lanyard Ready Connection. This is a solution for the OSHA tethered tools requirements and comes in the form of a handy loop at the base of the tool. It gives the operator additional safety and comfort when working at heights. Also, the models also feature an improved brake which stops the wheel 50 percent faster on average than their previous line of angle grinders.
DeWalt gave the three new small angle grinders an improved dust ejection system as well with its new design and functionality. Normal grinders can really affect the motor with the inability to properly eject dust from the tool without taking it past the motor. Instead, DeWalt designed what looks like a reverse turbo scoop to take air from the motor and use it to redirect dust out of the tool in a way that doesn’t encourage buildup and excessive wear. They demoed it by literally pouring dust into the DeWalt and competing models to see where it went. With the DeWalt dust ejection system a majority of the dust was immediately redirected out the back of the angle grinder. Another improvement is the new E-Clutch which can activate in less than a tenth of a second anytime the wheel is pinched or the grinder stalls for any reason.
Power + Ergonomics = Good
All three new grinders also use a new motor that DeWalt claims will yield 40% more power over the previous generation of small angle grinders.
The guard is another point of contention (or affection) in small angle grinders, and DeWalt went with a One-Touch 4.5-inch T27 guard that lets you move it around simply and position it using detents. This is a tool-free design as well, so DeWalt is hoping they’ll keep more people using the guard instead of removing it immediately upon first or second use (You know who you are!). The tools weigh around 4.6 lbs and have a narrow girth of just over 7.6 inches.
Your needs will determine which small angle grinder you want to pick up. The DeWalt DWE4222N angle grinder has the paddle style switch but no lanyard, while the DeWalt DWE4224 has a locking slide switch, and the lanyard is included. The DeWalt DWE4222 also has a paddle switch but includes the lanyard.
