Stihl MSA 300 C-O Chainsaw

The Stihl MSA 300 C-O Chainsaw Shows Off Pro-Grade Performance

As battery-powered technology progresses, the line between gas and cordless performance gets thinner and thinner. Over the last few years, we’ve covered many of Stihl’s battery-powered tools, and so far, we’re definitely impressed. Now, we’re turning our attention to the Stihl MSA 300 C-O battery-powered chainsaw, which promises Pro-grade performance without the gas-powered hassles.

Pros

  • Confident cutting power
  • Multiple cutting speeds
  • Metal bucking spikes

  • Chain Pitch: 0.325 in.

Cutting Power

The Stihl MSA 300 C-O sets the benchmark in performance as Stihl’s most powerful battery-powered chainsaw in their lineup. It has amazing throttle response with almost zero ramp-up time. It features a powerful commercial-grade brushless motor that allowed it to power through our Oak test log like a hot knife through butter.

While we never condone destructive testing, I did push saw pretty hard during our testing and never managed to stall the motor, even in ECO mode. Stihl doesn’t specify an exact chain speed or gas cc equivalent, but from our experience, it seems to fall somewhere in the 55 to 60cc range. With that said, it’s well within the Pro-grade class.

Speed Modes

speed modes

This saw is equipped with three speed modes—ECO, Normal, Max. The ECO mode will give you the longest runtime, but has a lower chain speed and power level. Normal and Max power modes both utilize the max power levels available, and only vary in chain speed. When using an AP 300 S battery, only the ECO power level is available.

To toggle between modes, simply press the power level selector button on the back of the motor housing.

Stihl MSA 300 C-O Chainsaw Design Notes

Stihl MSA 300 C-O
  • Model: Stihl MSA 300 C-O
  • Power Source: Stihl AP battery
  • Weight: 13.1 lbs (bare tool), 17.2 lbs (with AP 500 S battery)
  • Length: 37 in.
  • Oil Capacity: 10.5 oz.

Size and Weight

This saw weighs in at 13.1 pounds as a bare tool, 17.2 pounds with the recommended AP 500 S battery, and measures 37 inches from time to tail. In spite of its size, I was able to maneuver this saw pretty easily. In fact, the weight distribution was very similar to some of the gas models I’ve used, so it would be a pretty easy transition.

MSA 300 C-O profile

There aren’t too many surprises when looking at the grip and trigger. The grip is draped in a smooth rubber overmold, and you’ll also find a traditional beaver tail safety. There’s also a combination power and presences button on the side of the grip.

Digital Display

Like we’ve seen on other battery-powered chainsaws, the Stihl MSA features a digital control panel. The screen shows the cutting modes, low oil warning, chain brake indicator, and an overheating indicator.

Vibration Control

While battery-powered chainsaws aren’t known to have excessive vibration, it’s kinda hard to avoid, simply due to the nature of the tool. In light of this, Stihl designed this saw with a small separation between the motor housing and the rear handle to give your hands a little relief.

Power Options

The MSA 300 C-O chainsaw is fully compatible with all AP series batteries, as well as the much larger backpack mounted AR series in conjunction with the AP battery adapter. Like I mentioned before, Stihl recommends using the AP 500 S battery, as it will allow you to access all power levels and give you plenty of runtime.

Additional Features

  • Electronic chain brake
  • Metal bucking spikes
  • Captured bar nuts
