Stihl MSA 220 TC-O Chainsaw Boasts Gas-Level Performance
Stihl is no stranger to chainsaws, offering a variety of both gas- and battery-powered (and even a few corded) models. Although the brand’s battery-powered chainsaw line doesn’t run as deep as its gas line, you can still find a cordless model for every experience level, from residential to professional. Today we’re diving into the Stihl MSA 220 TC-O Top-Handle Chainsaw to see what it has to offer arborists working at height.

Stihl MSA 220 TC-O Top-Handle Chainsaw Performance
- Model: Stihl MSA 220 TC-O
- Brushless motor
- Quickstop chain brake
- Variable speed trigger
- Recommended 14-inch guide bar
Stihl tells us the MSA 220 TC-O chainsaw is the most powerful model in its battery-powered lineup, providing Pro arborists with gas-like power and performance thanks to its brushless motor.
This model is compatible with Stihl’s 12-inch and 14-inch Rollomatic E and E-Light guide bars. The brand tells us you can also find these bars on its gas counterparts, helping to make the switch from gas to battery power as seamless as possible.
Additionally, a variable speed trigger lets you adjust your blade speeds while you work. In the event of a kickback situation, the MSA 220 TC-O also employs Stihl’s Quickstop chain brake to stop the blade’s rotation within fractions of a second to reduce the risk of injury.
Stihl MSA 220 TC-O Top-Handle Chainsaw Design

This chainsaw is lightweight, at just 6 pounds bare. Adding an AP 300 battery (sold separately) brings the weight up to 10 pounds, which is still quite manageable, even when working at height.
A side-access chain tensioner helps you easily adjust your chain with a bar wrench and the captive bar nut eliminates the risk of dropping or losing the bar nut during chain maintenance.
An LED display screen ties it all together, displaying your settings and providing quick status updates while you work.
