Ryobi Updates Its 18V Cordless Trim Router with More Speed Options
Handheld routers are great for making decorative cuts in wood, but they’re also more multi-functional than you might think. From beveling edges, planing, and leveling wood pieces, the convenience of a compact tool gives you endless options, especially when working in tighter areas. The updated Ryobi 18V Cordless Trim Router features many similarities to the old model, however, it offers a few surprises under the hood that we think you’ll appreciate.

Ryobi 18V Cordless Trim Router Performance
- Power Source: Ryobi 18V battery
- No-Load Speed: 20,000-30,000 RPM
- Collet Size: 1/4 in.
- Motor Type: Brushed
Ryobi’s last compact router, model P601, only had one fixed speed of 29,000 RPM. In contrast, the PCL424 compact router gives you more speed versatility by incorporating a 6-position variable speed dial. It allows settings from 20,000 RPM to 30,000 RPM. This can help you if you need to adjust your speed based on the project at hand. We are a bit surprised that Ryobi didn’t update the motor from brushed to brushless, though. Hopefully, we’ll see that option in future models.
Ryobi 18V Cordless Trim Router Design

- Weight: 2.6 lbs. (bare), 3.6 lbs. (with 1.5Ah battery)

This model is also 20% more compact than Ryobi’s previous generation, weighing only 3.6 pounds. Its compact design is perfect for both one and two-handed operation. There’s a quick-release lever on the removable D-base for quick adjustments, plus, it features a micro-adjustment dial for fine-tuning the cutting depth. If you want to keep your work surface clear of debris, simply hook up a vacuum to the included adapter to reduce dust output.

Ryobi 18V Cordless Trim Router Price
This compact router retails for $99 as a bare tool from your local Home Depot. There are also a couple of kit configurations to suit a variety of needs. One includes a 2Ah battery and charger for $119 while the other comes with the bare tool plus a 15-piece carbide router bit set for $148.09. The Bottom Line
Overall, the Ryobi 18V trim router is a compact, easy-to-use option for light to medium-duty routing tasks. On the one hand, it doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as some of the Pro-level options out there. On the other hand, this router has plenty of power for serious DIYers and woodworking hobbyists all at a price that won’t break the bank.
