If we just look at the specs, Ridgid’s brushless motor produces 2700 RPMs, 950 in-lbs of torque, and 3800 BPM. Alongside Ridgid’s traditional SubCompact Impact Driver, those numbers aren’t exactly mind-blowing, but that’s not exactly a bad thing!
Bear in mind that a right angle impact driver’s main draw is its ability to access tight spaces, so it doesn’t need the same level of power. In fact, too much power could cause you to cam out of the fastener since you can’t apply direct force behind it to engage the bit.
As you would expect, this right angle impact driver is compatible with your traditional impact rated 1/4-inch hex shank bits. However, if you need to get into even tighter spaces, you can also use 1-inch hex bits to minimize the total head length. Admittedly, they are a little tougher to remove, but this might just be the silver bullet you’ve needed for your tool box.

The Ridgid right angle impact driver weighs 2.6 pounds as a bare tool and 3.6 pounds with a 2.0Ah Max Output battery. It measures 13 inches from tip to tail and has a very natural balance with the battery in place.
Overall, I really like the feel of this tool. The grip is draped in Ridgid’s standard rubber overmold for improved handling. We’re happy to see Ridgid included a large paddle trigger. This allows you to grip the tool from a variety of angles depending on your needs.
Speaking of angles, the R87730 has a pretty neat trick up its sleeve. The drive head is adjustable and has 8 positive stops that allow you to optimize the tool’s effective reach. Simply loosen the drive head screw and wiggle the drive head until upward enough to turn or take it off completely. The head fits very snug, and you may feel like you’re breaking it, but everything is A-OK. Keep in mind, it’s not necessary to fully remove the head in order to make an adjustment.
Getting the head back on takes a little finesse. You need to make sure the internal gearing is perfectly aligned for the head to fit properly. Once the gears are aligned, firmly push downward on the head until it is fully seated on the tool body and tighten the drive head screw to hold it in place.

The Bottom Line
The Ridgid right angle impact driver is definitely a specialty tool, but the advantages are undeniable, especially for electrical and HVAC Pros. Its compact head design grants you access into spaces where a traditional pistol grip tool is simply too large or cumbersome to fit. While this design does have some limitations, we think it’ll prove invaluable when space is at a premium.
