Berkeley, California Bans the Use of Natural Gas in All New Construction Homes
Following their infamous ban of plastic straws, Berkely, California is banning the use of natural gas in all new homes and businesses. As a cheaper heating alternative to electric heating, natural gas is a staple of the restaurant industry that uses it for its reduced cost and better cooking qualities.
According to a Fox News report, the ban adds even more to the rising cost of home construction. Coming on the heels of a state-wide mandate for solar panels (an estimated $10,000 increase in home cost), it seems electric bills are going to be rising as well.
How much higher? More than it would in our little corner of Central Florida. California buys much of its electricity from neighboring states, making it more expensive than producing it locally. Currently, California has no bans on purchasing coal-produced electricity from other states that we’re aware of.
The ban goes into effect on January 1, 2020. More than 50 other cities in California are considering following Berkeley down the same path.
