The Metabo HPT Narrow Crown Stapler Goes Cordless For The First Time
While the Metabo HPT Cordless Narrow Crown Stapler is the new on the block, it’s backed by a long line of reliable Hitachi nailers. Traditional pneumatic versions of this tool are widely used for installing soffit, upholstery work, and a wide range of woodworking applications. But with the advancements in cordless tool and battery technology, Metabo HPT decided it was finally time to leave the air hose behind.

The Metabo HPT narrow crown stapler has two firing modes: single-fire and bump-fire. For most applications, the single-fire mode is best because it offers accurate positioning. With bump-fire, you simply hold the trigger down, and it will fire a staple every time the nose comes in contact with your material. While this method is faster, you’re likely to experience less accuracy, and more incomplete drives. Metabo HPT tells us to expect up to 1,000 shots per charge using a 2.0Ah battery.
Depth adjustments are very easy on this stapler. Simply turn the dial on the side to sink fasteners deeper or shallower based on your application and material.
This narrow crown stapler holds up to 100 1/4-inch 18-gauge staples. Loading the magazine is very straight forward. Pull the spring-loaded carrier down until it locks into place, and then load your staples onto the guide rail. Lastly, pull back on the carrier, push the pin detent, and allow it to slide back into place.
So when should you use a narrow crown stapler? Well, these staplers are ideal for assembling case-style furniture, building cabinets, and even repair walls and other fixtures in mobile homes. During our hands on testing, this stapler had no issues fully driving 1-inch fasteners into our Oak test block. For us, this is a real testament to its overall power and capabilities. Keep in mind that it’s best to fasten across the wood grain, rather than with the grain, for the most secure hold.

Compared to the pneumatic models, this stapler is a little on the bulky side. With that said, it only weighs 5.4 pounds with a 2.0Ah battery, which is still very manageable. From tip to tail, it measures 11-1/2 inches and stands 10-1/2 inches tall. One thing we really love about Metabo HPT’s design is that this stapler will stand upright thanks to the battery providing a stable base. In spite of its slightly larger profile, this stapler is still quite nimble and very well-balanced.
Should the need arise, clearing jammed staples is tool-free and very easy. Simply lift the clasp on the nose to expose the firing chamber. From there, you can quickly clear away the jammed fastener and resume work.

The Metabo HPT N1804DA Stapler retails for $259 as a bare tool and $299 as a kit. The kit includes a single 2.0Ah battery, charger, and a storage bag. Both options are covered by Metabo HPT’s Limited Lifetime tool warranty, and the battery and charger hold a two and one-year warranty, respectively.
The Bottom Line
The Metabo HPT N1804DA narrow crown stapler is quickly becoming one of my favorite staplers for fastening tasks where a brad nail won’t cut it. If you’re consistently working with thin sheet goods or installing lattice skirting around mobile homes, you should definitely give this stapler a serious look. It’s compact, lightweight, and easy to use for Pros and beginners, alike. At $299 for the kit, it does carry a premium price, but we think it’s well worth it.
