The Makita BO5041K 5-inch random orbit sander has two new features over the previous model (BO5031K), including a more powerful 3.0 AMP motor and an “adjustable” front handle. Most orbital sanders come with either a stubby, integrated handle or none at all. The fact that Makita’s can be rotated out of the way is a nice feature and good to have on a more powerful sander. The BO5041K also features a variable speed control dial and large 1/8″ random orbit action for fast and smooth sanding. The sander has a rubberized palm grip which we have now come to expect from these tools – and Makita’s version offers ample comfort and control. This sander seems ideally suited for woodworking, cabinetry, carpentry, and more.
The Makita BO5041K random orbit sander features a 3.0 AMP motor with oversized sealed ball bearing construction for longer tool life. The variable speed control dial allows the user to match the sanding speed to the material, and has a range from 4,000 – 12,000 OPM (oscillations per minute). The tool features a large two-finger trigger switch with conveniently located lock-on button for continuous use. The large 1/8″ random orbit action delivers fast and smooth sanding and, most importantly for detail work, a swirl-free finish. There is a pad control and braking system for controlled pad speed upon startup and shut down.
The sander uses standard quick-change 5″ (8-hole) hook-and-loop abrasive paper, so it’s easy to find replacement pads. It also has an efficient through-the-pad dust collection system that helps provide a cleaner work environment. The high capacity dust collection system also includes a built-in vacuum port adapter that is engineered for improved dust collection.
The Makita BO5041K 5-inch random orbit sander is engineered for cabinetry, furniture, wood boats, decks, and general carpentry, and is ideal for cabinet makers, furniture builders, refinishers, boat builders, carpenters, and general contractors seeking a best in class random orbit sander. Model BO5041K includes abrasive paper, dust bag, and tool case (Makita offers a variety of hoses and adapters – sold separately – for attachment to vacuum systems).
This tool doesn’t exactly revolutionize the random orbit sander, but it comes across as a solid, reliable tool that is certain to work very well, and more importantly – work for a long time, in any journeyman or professional’s tool arsenal.
