Makita Grows Its 40V XGT Lineup with a New Right Angle Drill
Back in 2018, Makita released the XAD03 right-angle drill, which was powered by dual 18V LXT batteries. A few years later, they came out with the single-battery XAD05/6 models, which cut down on size and weight. Now, I’m looking at the newest Makita right-angle drill, the brushless GAD01 and GAD02, on the brand’s 40V battery platform. What effects does the larger battery capacity have on weight, size, and drilling speed? Let’s take a look to see if it earns a spot in your toolbox.
Makita 40V Right Angle Drill Performance
- Model: Makita GAD01 / GAD02
- Two speed modes
- 0 – 350 RPM
- 0 – 1400 RPM
- Variable speed trigger
- 1/2-inch or 7/16-inch keyed chuck
- Max drilling diameter:
- 6-1/4-inch (hole saw)
- 4-5/8-inch (self-feed)
- Torque limiter reduces gear damage
- Electric brake
- Soft start
The Makita GAD01/GAD02 right-angle drill runs on a Makita 40V battery that powers a brushless motor. It features two speed modes, delivering no-load speeds of up to 1400 RPM in the highest setting. A variable speed trigger also lets you set your drilling speed to the task at hand.
This tool’s keyed chuck is compatible with a variety of attachments for a wide range of drilling applications. You have the choice between a 1/2-inch chuck (GAD01) or a 7/16-inch chuck (GAD02). For cutting diameter, it achieves up to 6 1/4 inches using a hole saw and 4 5/8 inches using a self-feed bit.
The GDA01/GAD02 also boasts several safety and convenience features. For starters, it features a torque limiter that disengages the gears in the event of a bit bind-up, reducing gear damage. An electric brake stops bit rotation as soon as you let go of the trigger, letting you immediately line up your next rough-in. Finally, a soft-start system enables smooth and accurate start-ups.
Makita 40V Right Angle Drill Design
- Dimensions (LxWxH): 19 3/8 x 5 x 7 5/8 inches
- Weight: 12.8 pounds (with battery)
- Onboard LED light
- Onboard chuck key storage
- Side handle attaches to either side
- Retractable tool hook
One of the more obvious design features of this right-angle drill is its size. Comparing it to the 18V version, it goes without saying that the 40V model will carry a bit more heft. That said, the 40V version is more than 5 pounds heavier than its 18V predecessor, which is worth considering for jobs that require a lot of overhead work.
To make it easier to use in any orientation, Makita designed this tool with a side handle that attaches on both sides, enabling comfortable left- or right-handed operation.
Other design details include an integrated LED light, onboard chuck key storage, and a retractable hook to secure it when not in use.
Makita 40V Right Angle Drill Price
This drill retails for $559 as a bare tool and $759 as a kit, including a 4.0Ah battery and a charger. Makita backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty.
