We’ve talked a lot about Kobalt’s 24V power tools – they’re a nice blend of performance and value that fits well for entry to mid-level Pros. But what about the OPE side of things? Tools like the Kobalt 24V Cordless Hedge Trimmer don’t carry the same kind of sexy voltages like 40V, 56V, 80V, and higher.
Before you dismiss it as an underpowered attempt, look a little closer. There’s a brushless motor onboard and a 24″ blade that are the kind of specs reserved for Pro-targetted models.
So what else is hiding in that $149 price?
To go along with the blade length, the brushless motor gives you the power to cover a 3/4″ cutting capacity – something else we see at the Pro level.
Then there’s that $149 price. It includes a compact 2.0 Ah battery and charger, so you’re ready to get to work without any extra purchases. We know the brushless motor helps improve runtime and it weighs in bare at 6.2 pounds. OPE Reviews put it on their scales and got 7.7 pounds on their scale. That’s a turn in the right direction for ergonomics.
With this price and feature set, the Kobalt 24V Cordless Hedge Trimmer has the look and feel of a tool that’s going to fit into the homeowner level and be among the best and possibly reach into the Prosumer level depending on the power. 24 volts might be a little underpowered for Pros and working with 2.0 Ah and 4.0 Ah batteries will likely limit runtime to the point that Pros will look elsewhere. But if you’re a homeowner, it’s a compelling option that gets you away from cords, eliminates the hassles of gas, and unlocks Kobalt’s other 24V tools – a whole other line that’s also at an appealing price point.
