Klein Tools Cable Length Meter Overview
Klein built this meter to measure cable length in electrical, data, two-wire, coax, Romex, and other multiwire applications with a range of up to 3000 feet (914 meters). It uses TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) technology to measure distance-to-fault and open or short on both terminated or unterminated cables. As you would expect, you can switch between standard and metric measurement units.
Coax-BNC or alligator clips connect to most cable types. There’s an RJ45 jack to interface with terminated data cables.
The programming uses Velocity of Propagation (VoP) values to give you a length measurement with accuracy at ±2% plus 3 feet. You can store custom cable VoP values on the meter to help you work more efficiently when you’re repeating lengths.
The Klein Tools Cable Length Meter is also capable of toning unenergized, open-ended wires for tracing. If you want to use that function, you’ll need to grab the VDV500-123 Analog Probe to go with the meter.
The meter has a full-color, interactive LCD screen. While we haven’t had a chance to use it, Klein tells us that the control interface is simple to use.
It runs on just two AA batteries and you can expect about 15 hours of continuous use on each set.
