Greenworks 60V 22-inch Wheeled String Trimmer

Greenworks 60V Wheeled String Trimmer

While trimmer mowers aren’t a new concept, few major cordless OPE brands have stepped into that territory so far. The Greenworks 60V Wheeled String Trimmer is the first of its kind for the brand, boasting a 22-inch cutting width. How does it compare to a normal string trimmer, and what benefits can you expect? I’m sharing what I’ve learned to help you determine if it will fit into your lawn care regimen.

Greenworks 60V Wheeled String Trimmer Performance

  • Model: Greenworks WT60L800
  • Runtime: up to 40 mins
  • No-load speed: 3200 RPM
  • Brushless motor
  • Gas equivalence: 150cc
  • Variable speed trigger
  • Max line diameter: .125-inch
  • Cutting swath: 22-inch
  • Height adjustment: 1.5 – 3 inches

The Greenworks WT60L800 wheeled string trimmer is on the brand’s 60V battery system. Its brushless motor spins the trimmer line at up to 3200 RPM, with a variable speed trigger to set your speed to the task at hand.

Speaking of line, the trimmer head accepts line sizes up to 0.125 inches in diameter.

One of the main draws with trimmer mowers like this model is their larger trimming capacity compared to standard string trimmers. The WT60L800 has a 22-inch cutting swath, and Greenworks rates it for yards 3/4-acre to 1 acre. Using the 8.0Ah battery included in the kit, it has a runtime of up to 40 minutes.

Additionally, you can set your cutting height from 1.5 inches to 3 inches. To set your trimming height, start by loosening the hex nut on the spindle shaft. From there, move the trimmer head upward or downward to your desired cutting height, and retighten the nut.

The line speed may seem low compared to what you’re used to from a handheld string trimmer, and that’s true. However, the larger cutting swath means the line’s tip speed is higher than it might appear. For this trimmer, 3200 RPM at 22 inches gives it a top speed of just over 18,400 FPM. While that’s still lower than the top handheld models, it can swing a much higher-mass 0.125-inch line that makes up the difference.

  • Weight: 42.3 lbs (bare)
  • Wheel diameter: 14 in
  • Folding handles
  • Auto-switch battery ports
  • Manual line feed

It goes without saying that wheeled string trimmers like the WT60L800 deviate quite a bit from the standard string trimmer design. However, there are several benefits and differences that justify their consideration compared to handheld string trimmers.

For starters, the 22-inch cutting swath on this wheeled model is larger than we normally see in a handheld string trimmer. The largest capacity in the battery-powered sphere that we’ve seen at the time of writing is 18 inches, with the crown being split between the Greenworks Commercial 82V 82TB20 and Makita’s GRU07—both Pro-focused models. The strongest residential models peak at 17 inches, and 14 – 16 inches is more common.

The Greenworks WT60L800 weighs 42.3 pounds as a bare tool, with much of that weight supported by its large 14-inch back wheels.

You can adjust the handle height between two positions for comfort, and when you’re done trimming, the handle also folds down for compact storage.

The WT60L800 also strays away from the standard bump-feed line function, opting for a manual line-loading system. To replace the cutting line, cut off a 26.8-inch strip of line and feed it through the holes in the trimmer head. This model includes twelve precut 0.118 serrated nylon line strips to get you started.

Finally, this trimmer can accommodate up to two Greenworks 60V batteries. If you opt for two, the battery ports feature an auto-switch function that activates the second port when the first battery is depleted.

Greenworks 60V Wheeled String Trimmer Price

This trimmer retails for $599 as a kit with an 8.0Ah battery and charger. You can find it through Greenworks, Tractor Supply, or Walmart. There’s also a bare tool option for $349.

Greenworks backs your purchase with a 4-year warranty on the tool and battery.

Should You Buy It?

With its large cutting swath and beefier line diameter, the Greenworks 60V Wheeled String Trimmer does its best work in reclaiming overgrown grassy areas and working around fences or landscaping on larger properties. Having a strong enough motor to use heavy line helps it tame neglected areas while the deck design helps prevent long grass from tanlging as easily as it does with handheld trimmer. The large, easy-rolling wheels give it the maneuverability you need to work around fenceposts and landscaping elements easily.

If you’re looking at this model as a replacement for a handheld trimmer to take the strain off your back, take a close look at the areas you trim. This trimmer is more of a broadsword than a scalpel, so it’s not as easy to trim precisely. Additionally, the large line diameter can more easily take paint off your house, break vinyl fencing, or damage wood privacy fence panels. If those are big concerns for you, consider opting for a lightweight handheld model instead.
