Bosch Bulldog Xtreme Max SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer

Bosch Bulldog Xtreme Max SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer

Bosch recently introduced its newest Bulldog with the Bosch Bulldog Xtreme Max SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer for drilling and chipping in masonry and concrete. This 1-1/8-inch diameter drilling capacity rotary hammer weighs 6.9 pounds, offers drilling, hammer drilling, and chiseling modes. It’s powered by an 8.5-amp motor delivering 2.4 foot-pounds of impact energy with 5,100 no-load BPM and 1,300 no-load RPM.

Notable features of the Bosch GBH2-28L include Bosch-exclusive KickBack Control for bind-up situations, Vario-Lock chisel positioning, vibration control, a counter-balance system, variable-speed reversing trigger, an overload clutch, hammer hook, and a D-handle design.

“The jobsite is tough place, particularly for power tools working in concrete and masonry. The Bosch GBH2-28L is made to succeed in drilling and chiseling applications that require maximum power in a lightweight tool. At 5,100 no-load bpm, this is the tool for the job.”

Our Take

You’d be hard-pressed to find a company with a deeper bench of rotary hammers than Bosch – you could have one for every day of the week and probably then some. It’s a testimony to the company’s attention to detail – Bosch has seen the demand for differentiation within the category and answered the call. That suits us just fine.

We’ve seen some promising cordless rotary hammers lately, but Bosch reminds us that there’s still a place for the corded species – and with good reason. If you’ve got a big job ahead – drilling many holes or chiseling a large area – you’ll want the continuous power of a corded rotary hammer. Although you’ll be tethered to the power source, you won’t have to bring a heavy bag full of batteries or wait for a recharge cycle.

The SDS-Plus shank will handle all but the heaviest of masonry work (for that you’ll need the incompatible SDS-Max shank – and a different rotary hammer). It’s no surprise that the SDS-Plus is the most common size since it covers the majority of jobs. And it looks like the Bosch Bulldog Xtreme Max SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer will be powerful enough to punch slightly above its weight.

With features like KickBack Control, vibration control, and the counter-balance system, Bosch has done an admirable job of making their rotary hammers as comfortable and safe to use as possible. After all, the way a rotary hammer accomplishes some of its best work can make it unwieldy and fatiguing. Those features combined with the D-handle will likely make this Bulldog’s bite easy on your hands.
