Benchmade Bugout and Mini Bugout Upgrade with More Premium Materials
We’ve reviewed dozens of pocket knives over the years, and in our experience, Benchmade is at the top of the class in terms of quality and performance. The Bugout pocket knife already received top marks in our initial review process, and now Benchmade is offering some new design choices for the mini version of this knife. I’m looking at the Bugout Mini folding knife to see how it differs from its larger counterparts, and what Benchmade does differently in its design.
Pros
- Compact
- Metal handle for added durability
- Easy, safe closing action
- Ideal for those with smaller hands
Cons
- Premium pricing
- Those with larger hands should stick to the original model
Benchmade Mini Bugout Pocket Knife Blade
- Blade material: S90V stainless steel
- Blade finish: Cerakote crushed silver
- Blade design: drop point
- Blade length: 2.82 inches
- Open length: 6.49 inches
- Closed length: 3.7 inches
The Benchmade Bugout and Mini Bugout knives aren’t brand-new concepts, but the brand is rolling out a new design for both models that focuses on more premium materials. This new premium design starts at the blade.
Before, Bugout and Mini Bugout knife blades came standard with S30V steel. The new premium models up the ante with S90V stainless steel, which offers more edge retention and corrosion resistance. Not only that, but these new knives also feature a crushed silver Cerakote finish for added toughness.
The Mini Bugout has a 2.82-inch long drop-point blade. While it’s not the smallest knife we’ve reviewed, it’s still pretty darn compact. I was able to easily fit it in my pocket, and it would be right at home in any toolbox, tacklebox, or glove compartment.
The Mini Bugout measures 6.49 inches in length while deployed and 3.7 inches when closed. The standard size Bugout measures 7.46 inches while open and has a blade length of 3.24 inches.
Deployment and Closing
Benchmade’s deployment system is more unique than many other knife brands. The Bugout and Mini Bugout knives use what’s called an Axis Lock mechanism, which is a spring-loaded release at the top of the handle. The spring allows you to flick it open smoothly with one hand, and it’s also used to close the knife.
Additionally, these knives feature an ambidextrous thumb stud that allows for quick opening while keeping your fingers off of the blade itself for added safety.
Benchmade Mini Bugout Pocket Knife Handle
The Bugout and Mini Bugout knives are available in a variety of handle materials and colors through customization, coming standard with Grivory handles. However, with Benchmade’s focus on premium construction, the models I am reviewing feature a 6061-T6 anodized aluminum handle.
The aluminum handle looks great and is extremely durable, but it does have a couple of drawbacks. When it comes to aesthetics, it’s easier to scratch the finish. On the practical side, it can slip more easily if your hands are sweaty or greasy.
In the photos, the Mini Bugout’s aluminum handle is a nice forest green with a matte finish, and the standard-size Bugout is a matte Crater Blue.

Benchmade is also offering the standard-size Bugout knife in a dual-tone Redstone Richlite/Ash Gray Aluminum handle design, which will launch in March 2025 for $400.
Finally, you also have the option to customize your Bugout knife, choosing designs and material preferences for your handle and blade. Final Thoughts
While the Mini Bugout and Bugout knives have been around for a while, I appreciate that Benchmade is still offering new ways to experience them. The addition of an aluminum handle adds an extra layer of durability and highlights the brand’s focus on premium construction. And frankly, they look great and feel even better in hand. If you’re looking for a smaller EDC build that will stand the test of time, the Benchmade Mini Bugout is a fantastic choice to consider.
