Kobalt XTR High-Torque Impact Wrench Breaks Up to 1200 Ft-Lbs of Torque
There’s a handful of Kobalt cordless impact wrenches to choose from and they all have their place in the shop or on the jobsite. None of them have come close to the power we’re seeing from the Kobalt XTR high-torque impact wrench, though!
Pros
- 750 ft-lbs fastening, 1200 ft-lbs breakaway torque
- Rubber boot covers the nose and protects finishes
- 3-speed electronic controls
- Excellent value for the performance ($269 kit)
Cons
- No bare tool option available
Recommendation
-
The Kobalt XTR high-torque impact wrench has much more power than you’ll need for most passenger vehicle and residential construction applications. It’s great having the additional muscle when you need to break loose a stuck bolt, though. Thanks to its 3 speed settings, you still have an extra measure of control when overtightening is a risk.
Overall, you get a lot for your money and it’s a huge performance boost over Kobalt’s previous 24V Max high-torque model.
Kobalt XTR High-Torque Impact Wrench
More Power
The big story across the entire Kobalt XTR line is higher performance. For the Kobalt XTR high-torque impact wrench, that translates as higher torque. Much higher torque.
Kobalt’s standard cordless high-torque model boasts 650 ft-lbs of breakaway torque. That’s pretty stout.
But the XTR model is sporting 750 ft-lbs of torque. Oh, did I mention that’s fastening torque? For the apples-to-apples comparison, it has 1200 ft-lbs of breakaway torque—over 90% more than the regular model!
More Control
In addition to improving the power, Kobalt also moves from one speed to three. It’s more in line with what we expect from professional models and adds a welcome measure of control when you don’t need all of the brushless motor’s power.
Less Vibration
With the kind of violence a high-torque impact wrench brings to the table, we’ll take any help we can get. The Kobalt XTR high-torque impact wrench includes built-in vibration control. That’s something the standard model doesn’t offer.
Smaller Profile
It’s no surprise to find that such a boost in power also comes with a bit of a weight increase. Weighing 8.7 pounds with its 4.0Ah Ultimate Output battery, the XTR is about 1.1 pounds heavier.
The head is actually more compact, though, moving from about 10 inches down to 9.
Additional Features
- LED light
- Compatible with all Kobalt 24V Max batteries and chargers
Price
At the time we’re writing this, you can only get the Kobalt XTR high-torque impact wrench as a kit—there’s no bare tool option if you’re already running Ultimate Output batteries.
However, that kit is just $269, making it a really solid value. Besides, who doesn’t need an extra battery?
