  • Pro Rating 9.0

The Hang-A-Light 120W LED is super-simple to use and puts out a ton of light. When you have AC power available, it's as easy as plugging into it with the 5' cord or an extension cord and daisy-chaining the rest of your string. If you don't, just grab the model without the cord and hardwire in your temp lighting.

Southwire ProBuilt Hang-A-Light 120-Watt LED Blasts 15,000+ Lumens of Area Lighting

LED lighting takes on many forms and Southwire’s ProBuilt brand makes some of the best in the business. The Southwire ProBuilt Hang-A-Light 120-Watt LED uses a steel safety cage and is designed to replace less efficient temporary lighting for construction and any application where temporary area lighting is useful.

Pros

  • 15,000+ lumens of 360º light
  • Simple to assemble and install
  • Lower power draw than halogen lights
  • Neutral 5000K color temperature

Cons

  • No major drawbacks

Design

The light and bulb come in separate packages and assembly is pretty simple. The safety cage has enough give to release the base, giving you access to the ballast assembly. Loosen, but don’t remove, the 4 Phillips head screws and slip the ballast above the cage. Tighten the screws back down and you’re ready to install the bulb.

Once you screw the bulb in place, replace the cage base. That’s all there is to it. You can teach your apprentice to assemble them in about 5 minutes, and it should barely take him or her that long to unbox and assemble however many you need for that job.

The model we’re testing comes with a 5′ AC cord with daisy chain receptacle wired for 120V. It’s also available without if you want to hardwire them in. Each ballast needs 1.5 amps max and the bulbs have a 1.2-amp rating. Southwire recommends you connect no more than 3 of the 120-watt lights.

When you use the corded model, make sure you connect the first one in the line to a switch-activated outlet or use an extension cord long enough to easily plug in manually.

What makes these so easy to use is the clip above the ballast. It’s nearly identical to what we see on Southwire’s Jobsite Lantern.

Output

The 120-watt version of the Southwire ProBuilt Hang-A-Light puts out an impressive 15,600 lumens from its corn cob-style LED bulb. In terms of safety lighting, that gives you a solid 65′ diameter in 360º.

Southwire sticks with a 5000K color temperature to give you a bright, clear light that trends just on the blue side of the spectrum. It’s in the go-to range for work environments and jobsites that need bright illumination.

Price

With the cost savings of LED and its incredibly long bulb life, these lights will pay for themselves over time. Even though the $318.34 upfront cost is a bit higher, it’s something to keep in mind.
