Zircon Corporation, makers of the original electronic stud finder, has recently released a WiFi enabled water detector. The Zircon Leak Alert WiFi is the latest addition to the company’s line of water detectors. Like the Leak Alert units before it, the Leak Alert Wifi will sound an alarm alerting the user to potential water leaks. Only this updated unit will also utilize its WiFi connectivity to fire off an email, alerting the user to potential leaking wherever he might be.

How It Works
Encased in a floatable plastic case, the Zircon Leak Alert WiFi has metal sensors running down the side and bottom of the device. When water comes into contact with the metal sensors, the circuit completes, setting off a series of events.
LED lights flash in a visual alert. A 105-decibel alarm sounds off, alerting anyone within earshot to a problem. And, a unique feature to this model, the Leak Alert WiFi will send notifications to up to 5 email addresses. Users can be made aware of a problem even if they are somewhere else entirely. This unit can potentially save homeowners, renters, business owners, and property managers thousands of dollars in water damage and repairs.
Zircon engineered the Leak Alert WiFi with Wi-Fi connectivity with no hub required. The obvious caveat is that you have to have an active Wifi signal in range of the unit for it to communicate. A little thicker than a deck of cards, the Zircon Leak Alert WiFi can fit into a variety of spaces: under sinks, near water heaters, around sump pumps, near plumbing, etc.
All Zircon Leak Alert WiFi units are housed in shock and water resistant casing that floats. In case of flooding, the unit remains operational and will continue to function for the life of the battery.
Final Thoughts
There was a time in my life where I was in the unfortunate position of being in between residences, and I had some friends who were nice enough to let me, and everything I owned, crash at their place for a while. Most of my belongings, along with some of their expensive appliances, were stored in their basement. Unbeknownst to any of us, their basement was protected by a failing sump pump… which we found out about a few short hours after a particularly nasty storm finally broke. We walked downstairs to find a foot of water covering the basement floor, and in my case, soaking into the first layer of boxes holding much of my stuff.
These things happen, and most of it was salvageable, but I can’t help but think about how useful something like the Zircon Leak Alert WiFi might have been then. Chances are pretty good that we were all at the bar across the street at the time. But, I think that I definitely would have preferred to receive an email alert during happy hour, rather than coming home to the sloppy mess that was all my earthly possessions.
As it stands, the Zircon Leak Alert WiFi retails for less than $50 dollars, which in the grand scheme of things, is a whole lot less than what you could potentially lose to water damage.
