Coast recently announced the dual-powered, rechargeable Coast HP314R LED Flashlight. This unique light uses Coast’s Flex Charge Dual Power Rechargeable System with either lithium-ion or four standard D-cell alkaline batteries. The lithium-ion batteries are recharged through the Pro-Tek charging port, located under the tail cap (which allows the recharging of other devices that use USB cords via the battery pack.) Notably, batteries can be charged inside the flashlight, or outside, so users can always have a fresh battery ready.
The Coast HP314R LED Flashlight features a quick cycle switch that allows users to select between a high output setting of 1,200 lumens, a high-powered strobe mode, or a low output of 165 lumens when using alkaline batteries. With rechargeable batteries, the HP314R has a high output setting of 1,000 lumens, a high-powered strobe mode, or a low output of 105 lumens.
Whether the HP314R is operated by four D-cell batteries or the rechargeable battery pack, the run times equate to 10 hours (D-cell) or 3 hours, 15 minutes (li-ion) on high power and 85 hours (D-cell) or 94 hours (li-ion) on low power.
The X-Range Spot Beam delivers a focused light at far distances, while still offering a consistent circle of light in the Broad Flood Beam mode. The focused spot beam distance is maximized at 2,762 feet (842 meters) using alkaline batteries. The HP314R’s Slide Focus lets users focus the flashlight by moving the front bezel forward or back.
A Cyclone Heat Sink System decreases heat buildup, facilitates maximum light output, and increases LED lifespan. Coast designed the flashlight’s aluminum casing to be impact-resistant and water-resistant using a rubberized O-ring.
The Coast HP314R LED Flashlight is tested to ANSI FL1 flashlight standards and is backed by a lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship.
Our Take
Coast is breaking out from the low- and mid-range flashlights we’ve known them for and producing some genuinely compelling products to cross blades with the likes of LEDLenser. The new Coast HP314R is an excellent example.
At a nearly $500 MSRP, high build quality is a must along with the ability to focus the beam. What’s likely the most impressive feature is the dual power source capability. While conscientious preppers may go between delight and groaning at the realization they have to carry additional D-cells in their go bags, most of us are just happy to have options.
1200 lumens may seem on the low side with a light in this class, but the throw of more than half a mile is impressive. Realistically, unless you’re trying to guide in a 747 for landing, you’ll have plenty.
This model also highlights the differences between alkaline and lithium-ion power with a reduction in light output and run time when switching to the rechargeable source. It also shows us that li-ion technology is likely far from its full development potential.
