The Wolverine DuraShocks SR Icon Work boots Improve on a Classic Design
You may wonder why we’re reviewing Wolverine DuraShocks SR Icon work boots. After all, the SR was first launched in 1998. However, the devil’s in the details, and the Icon is a brand-new take on this best-selling classic. In this review, I’m diving into what sets these boots apart and how they feel so you can decide if they’re right for your feet!
Pros
- Excellent value
- Short break-in period
- Waterproof design
- Versatile tread pattern
- Extra stitching at key wear points
Cons
- A little narrow in the toe box
Wolverine DuraShocks SR Icon Work Boots: First Impressions
More often than not, I tend to go for taller boots because of the added ankle protection. It’s even better with these 6-inch hiker-style boots which have a tremendous amount of padding around the top to help cushion any potential impacts.
Out of the box, these boots are pretty comfortable and feel like they’re already broken in. The soft leather upper is flexible, which improves the overall feel of this boot, especially compared to some of the other leather boots I’ve worn in the past.
From the look of things, Wolverine DuraShocks SR Icon work boots are a great year-round option. The rugged slip and oil-resistant polyurethane outsole features a mildly aggressive tread pattern. It’s more aggressive than a traditional wedge, but the lugs aren’t as deep or numerous as those on loggers. This makes it an excellent option for folks who regularly work on flat, level surfaces, and occasionally need a little more traction when the job takes you off the beaten path, so to speak.
Admittedly, they are a little snug in the toe box. My feet aren’t particularly wide, but these boots are slightly narrower than expected. I expect they’ll loosen up over a longer break-in period, but if this is a concern, I’d suggest going with a wide model.

Comfort and Fit
Ordering boots online can be a little nerve-racking, especially when there isn’t a reliable sizing guide. I typically wear a size 11 regular work boot, and as far as length goes, the Wolverine DuraShocks SR boots are spot on. But as I mentioned before, they are a little narrow, so if you’re on the edge between regular and wide, I suggest going with the wide option.
I immediately noticed that the footbed was a little harder than I expected. This can be a double-edged sword in the world of footwear. On one hand, this provides added stability, especially for flat-footed individuals, but it can also be mildly uncomfortable over longer durations on hard surfaces.

In terms of weight, these boots clock in at 3.25 pounds as a pair. That’s pretty light compared to most of the boots I’ve reviewed in the past, even the Wolverine ReForce EnergyBound work boots, which weigh 3.9 pounds.
Construction
This boot features a fully waterproof, full-grain leather upper with a breathable moisture-wicking mesh liner to help keep your feet cool and dry. The polyurethane sole is bonded to the leather upper utilizing direct attachment construction, which makes it extremely flexible from the get-go. Wolverine also utilizes a nylon stability shank that keeps your heel secure on uneven terrain.
Additionally, there is double and triple stitching around key wear points for increased durability over the long haul.
Key Improvements
As I mentioned before, the DuraShocks SR Icon work boots are an updated version of the original DuraShocks that were introduced in 1998. The new version features additional PU material in the footbed which provides increased stability, a lighter CarbonMax safety toe cap, as well as Waterproof Plus technology to keep your feet dry all day long.
Wolverine DuraShock SR Icon Work Boots Price

Likewise, wide sole models are available in 1/2 sizes from 7-12, with whole sizes going up to 13. Both options are available in both soft or composite toe.
The DuraShock SR Icon line is also available in a few other styles:
- 10-inch Wellington: $179.95 (soft toe), $184.95 (comp toe)

The Bottom Line
There’s a reason the Wolverine DuraShock lineup is so popular. It includes boots at a reasonable price point with a comfortable design that’s approachable across the trades. Even though Durashocks SR Icon work boots have a slimmer fit, they’re still very comfortable, and the short break-in period is a major plus in my book. So, if you’re in the market for a pair of sturdy boots that won’t break the bank, Wolverine’s revitalized SR Icon is a no-brainer.
