Speed and Power
When it comes to speed, the IR W9691’s brushless motor churns out 890 RPMs with an impact rate of 1,170 BPM. That’s a little slower than some of the other cordless models on the market, but with its higher torque specs, it’s not really a surprise since there’s typically an inverse relationship between speed and torque.
IQV Power Control System
Power regulators are nothing new in the pneumatic world, but Ingersoll Rand took it one step further. The IQV Power Control System dial on top of the tool body allows you to quickly dial in the level of torque needed for the job. The IR W9691 features four power control modes—Snug (180 ft-lbs), Mid-Power (400 ft-lbs), Max Power (2200 ft-lbs), and reverse (3000 ft-lbs).
What makes the Snug and Mid-power modes even more useful is that they’ll automatically stop rotation once they hit their torque thresholds. With that level of control, this high-powered tool is incredibly useful beyond just breaking frozen nuts and bolts.

Size and Weight
The IR W9691 weighs 26.6 pounds as a bare tool and 29.75 pounds with the two IQV20 5.0Ah batteries in place. Overall, it measures 26-1/2 inches from tip to tail, including the 6-inch extended anvil.
This heavy-duty impact wrench is certainly no featherweight, but for what it’s worth, it’s incredibly well-balanced. Part of this is thanks to the location of the motor, as well as its dual-battery configuration that helps offset the weight of the anvil.
Ergonomically speaking, I love the feel of this impact wrench…other than the weight, of course! The rear grip is draped in a textured rubber overmold and features a larger two-finger trigger. The front handle is incredibly stout, clearly built to survive the rigors of a mechanic shop. If need be, the front handle can also rotate 360° to accommodate a variety of hand positions.
Anvil
The IR 1-inch W9691 high-torque impact wrench sports a beefy 6-inch extended anvil with a friction ring and through-hole for added security. This tool is also available with a standard 1-inch anvil (W9491), but the extended anvil grants better access to recessed areas.
