Last October’s Equip Expo had a lot in store for outdoor power equipment enthusiasts and Pros alike. If you’re not familiar with the event, it’s three days of gear galore as manufacturers from all over gather to showcase their products. Naturally, Greenworks was on hand to participate in Kentucky, where they featured the new MaximusZ Zero-Turn.
No doubt, this residential mower has plenty to offer. But is it the right model for you? Let’s find out.
Greenworks MaximusZ Zero-Turn Performance
We’ll start with the mower’s power plant. Greenworks equipped their ZT with four 60V 8.0Ah batteries and two suitcase-style batteries. Estimates rate this unit as the equivalent of a 31-hp gas model. The word is that you can expect over two hours of runtime, which Greenworks says is a new standard for residential mowing.
That point may be up for debate. However, I feel confident in saying that the brand has done a nice job with its riding gear’s battery systems. Take, for example, the Greenworks TBDUTV, which the brand announced around the same time as the MaximusZ Zero-Turn. This 60V utility vehicle will give you up to 20 miles per charge.

But back to the Maximus, this unit can charge from zero to 100% in about 3.5 hours, which isn’t bad for a residential mower.
In terms of cutting, you have three low-profile deck motors that deliver blade speeds of up to 17,000 feet per minute. I’m also happy with the deck’s 14 height positions, enabling you to cycle through settings within a range of 1.5 to 4.5 inches. As for deck sizes, you have a choice of either 54 or 60 inches.
Finally, Greenworks says the 60-inch unit can tackle 5 acres on a single charge. You’ll get 3.5 acres with the 54 inch.

Greenworks MaximusZ Zero-Turn Design
If you liked the performance features, then you’ll like what’s up next. First, there’s my favorite–the dump bed. This isn’t something you often see on a zero-turn, so Greenworks caught my attention with that one. In addition to cutting, you’ll be able to accomplish tasks typically reserved for lawn and garden tractors.
Specifically, you can haul 200 pounds and tow 300.
Something else I liked seeing was the electric takeoff output port. And, admittedly, I’ve seen these on other battery-powered mowers. Essentially, this setup turns the Greenworks MaximusZ zero-turn into a roving generator for a variety of accessories, such as a bagging kit or blower. In other words, you don’t need a secondary power source, which is a real convenience.
And, last but not least, you have a rollover protection system, as well as LED lights for work sessions that run into the dusky hours.
