Makita’s new drywall screwdriver line comes with an impressive new lightweight design. There are three new models and each features a 6-amp motor, aluminum gear housing, adjustable depth locator, and LED work light. The only difference between models is the maximum speed (which of course begs the question: why not one tool with three settings?). The FS6200 delivers 0-6,000 RPM while the FS4200 delivers 0-4,000 RPM – and both weigh just 2.9 lbs. The FS2200 delivers 0-2,500 RPM and weighs 3.5 lbs. Makita also provides several model options: The FS4200A features a 50 ft. cord and the FS4200TP a 50 ft. twist lock cord. The FS6200TP also features a 50 ft. twist lock power cord.
These guns are, as you’d expect, super light and will allow drywall installers to have an easier time when securing sheetrock overhead. An ergonomically designed grip makes the tool feel comfortable in the hand, even during extended periods of use, and the LED work light, located – oddly enough – on the bottom of the handle, insures you’ll see what you’re fastening even when you’re off in a closet or other confined space. Speed is controlled by an oversized variable trigger and there is a lock to keep it on for extended use.
These aren’t a far departure from Makita’s earlier models, which also weighed in at just 2.9 pounds, but they do offer an updated appearance and better grip. The addition of LED lighting is also welcome as is the improved Sure-Lock depth adjustment system. An adjustable depth locator assembly with Makita’s “Sure-Lock” feature means that you’ll get consistent depth results for all fastener types and lengths. The system works by rotating the collar which adjusts the extension depth for the bit. You can even store the depth locator on the tool itself along with the bit tip – both of which affix to the base of the handle. The tool includes a magnetic 3″ bit holder and takes standard 1/4-inch hex bits, typically a #2 Phillips for drywall screws.
The tool is well-made, as you’d expect from Makita, with a cast aluminum gear housing and metal-reinforced belt clip that won’t snap off during hard use.
