Metabo HPT Features 12V Size on an 18V Platform
The Metabo HPT DS18DDX 18V Sub-Compact Drill offers a powerful and compact solution for working in tighter spaces. Now, Metabo HPT lets users have a 12V-sized tool while staying on the popular 18V battery platform.
Key Metabo HPT Sub-Compact Drill Features
We really like the size of the Metabo HPT Sub-compact drill. At 6.2″ long and 2.7 lbs. with the kitted battery, it can fit easily into small spaces without causing you inordinate fatigue. It may not be the shortest drill, but the tool has a very small diameter which lightens the load considerably.
What’s more, this helpful sub-compact size doesn’t force you onto a 12V battery platform. Instead, you get to use Metabo HPT 18V batteries, so you can upgrade to bigger and other tools when you need more features or power. Not having to run double-duty on battery platforms and chargers has its advantages.
In terms of concrete numbers, the Metabo HPT Sub-Compact Drill features a brushless motor that provides 1,700 RPM and 485 in-lbs of torque.

Compared to Metabo HPT’s last compact 18V model, the DS18DBFL2QB, we can see that this sub-compact model does offer some substantial weight and size reductions. This model is around 10% shorter and 23% lighter than the already pretty size-conscious Black Series compact drill.
Of course, you sacrifice some speed and power with the drop in weight and size. The DS18DDX maxes out at 100 less rpm with 135 less in-lbs. of torque. This won’t affect you much in terms of your metal drilling capacity. But, with softwood, you’ll lose just over half an inch of practical drilling capacity.
Other Features
- Keyless 1/2″ chuck
